My favourite thing about Canada is the maple leaf. I have always been curious to explore the country that is represented by such a beautiful leaf. When I first arrived in Thunder Bay, I was attracted by the surrounding environment. I am in the Natural Resources Management program. Lakehead University has a beautiful campus which provides us a natural lab to study.
Lakehead University has small classes. This gives me a chance to work with Canadian students, and because of this, my spoken English has improved a lot. The professors are also approachable; you can always reach them if you need any help.
There are also other study resources on campus. The Writing Centre provides assistance for students who need help fixing their essays and reports. And you can even find a tutor through the Student Success Centre if you need extra help in an academic course.
I chose Lakehead University because it has one of the few 1-year Business Master programs in the country and is set in the beautiful landscape of the Lake Superior area. The Lakehead MBA is affordable yet is a high quality and rigorous academic program where I benefit from the practical knowledge of lecturers with deep industry experience. Lakehead also has quite a vibrant student body that utilizes networking and information sharing that will lead to job opportunities after graduating. Being able to study with classmates coming from diverse backgrounds and cultures provides me with more exposure and experience for later success.
Studying English at Lakehead was an incredible experience! My English professor was always giving us different activities, so we learned almost without noticing it. Boredom was not included in our vocabulary. Aside from classes, we visited places around the city including the museum. This helped me to learn Canada's history and to interact with Canadians and Indigenous people of the city. I also experienced the most spectacular landscapes I've ever seen!
Lakehead University gave me the platform to develop my leadership qualities, and the support from staff and faculty allowed me to grow as a person. The University has given me the freedom to reach far in my work within the city and on campus, for example, I have mentored refugee and indigenous youth through Thunder Bay Multicultural Association, and done talks at high school and middle schools in Thunder Bay.
All my faculty have had a huge impact on me and have all supported me through my education. I think Dr. David Barnett, the Dean of Engineering, has had the biggest impact on me.
Lakehead has small class sizes and interaction with professors face-to-face. There is a good balance between in-class and hands-on learning. Lakehead has a very good support system for students to succeed. The fact that over 90% of students find employment after graduation speaks volumes about Lakehead's education.
The professors in Electrical and Computer Engineering at Lakehead University have a high level of expertise. Lakehead’s small class size increases time for student-professor interaction, thus helping me to understand the material better. I had the opportunity to work as a research assistant for one of my professors. My work was related to designing and analyzing Integrated Circuits. This was a life changing experience for me.
Outside of classes, fellow students and I founded the Lakehead University Indian Students Association (LUISA). I had a proud opportunity to be the Secretary of the club and then the club’s President. During my time with LUISA, we organized multiple events with the help of Lakehead University Student Union (LUSU).
Lakehead is one of the best universities for my program and there are a lot of summer job and co-op opportunities. Lakehead is not 100% about academics; they also focus on the practical and hands-on, which means when I graduate and go to the workforce, I will be more experienced.
Student life at Lakehead is also really awesome. There are a lot of student groups here and during weekends and breaks they always have a lot of activities planned. Badminton is my favourite sport, and Lakehead has a very good club. This makes me feel at home.
The moment I entered Thunder Bay and Lakehead University, I felt very very welcomed. People here are incredibly friendly. It was the best decision I have made in my life.
