Study a graduate program in psychology
What will I study in a graduate psychology program?
Understanding what people think and how they express themselves is a complex science. Studying for a graduate psychology program will give you the skills to understand the human mind.
Postgraduate psychology programs look at the psychology of groups and individuals usually covering the areas of cognitive psychology, child development, personality, memory and social psychology.
Students studying postgraduate psychology will need to have good research skills and be able to interpret a lot of data and effective communicate the results.
Length of program
The length of a psychology graduate program depends on where you study. Masters programs last the following duration in each country:
- UK – 1-3 years
- US – 1-3 years
- China – 2-3 years
- Canada – 1-2 years
Specific entry requirements for individual courses are different for each postgraduate program and university but in the majority in cases you will be expected to have obtained an undergraduate degree in psychology, degree where psychology makes up part of the course or another degree in either a science of social science discipline.
If you choose to study somewhere with a different first language from your own, you may have to take a language test before you are admitted.
After studying a postgraduate psychology degree, a fifth of graduates go on to be practising psychologists.
Despite such a small number of psychology graduates going into the field, the skills learned during a graduate psychology program can be easily transferred to other careers.
Skills like communication, handling data/statistics, problem-solving and team-work will help in many jobs such as teaching, social work, work in the media or health care.
