What will I study in a graduate music program?

A graduate degree in Music will allow you to advance your knowledge and understanding of music and become and expert in the field.
Postgraduate music programs combine advanced study in a specialised areas (usually music performance, composition or conducting) with academic music study such as music history and music theory.
Courses are widely available in performance, composition, conducting and music education.  Music programs generally consist of traditional academic learning and practical elements such as performances and recitals.
Students are likely to be marked on a combination of exams and practical work.

Length of program

Postgraduate music programs generally take one or two years of full time study but this can vary between different countries and universities.

Entry requirements

To study for a graduate music degree most institutions require you to have obtained an undergraduate degree or diploma in music. Most courses require that you pass an audition that included performing advanced pieces in a range of styles.
Degrees in conducting and composition will also require the submission of a portfolio of work.

Career development

A graduate music degree allows students to work as professional performers, conductors and composers or also move into the area of music education. Here they teach instrumental or vocal performance at schools, universities and colleges.

Other music graduates use the academic skills gained during the program such as research and writing to move into non-music related sectors such as administration or government work.
