Study a graduate program in economics

What will I study in a graduate economics program?

There has never been a more interesting time to study a graduate economics program. The global recession coupled with a growth of entrepreneurship means that many businesses and governments are looking for a new economic model.
A postgraduate course in economics will build on your previous finance knowledge using modules in theoretical and applied economics, macroeconomics and mathematics for economists. However, as economics is primarily a social science, you will be investigating how financial models affect people. You will also be expected to work on a final written dissertation.
Most graduate economics programs will allow you to focus more in depth on a particular area, such as financial econometrics, macroeconomics or asset pricing and modelling. Look for a course that specialises in your area.

Length of program

The length of a graduate economics program depends on where you study and at what institution. Postgraduate courses generally last the following duration in these countries:
  • UK – 1-3 years
  • US – 2-3 years
  • China – 1-3 years
  • Canada 1-3 years

Entry requirements

Getting on to graduate economics program will normally require a strong background and previous qualifications in economics or a related business or financial field.

As many postgraduate courses have a strong statistical and mathematical background, you may be expected to take pre-sessional courses in these areas to get your skills up to scratch before starting on a main economics course.

Career development

Postgraduate courses in economics are extremely popular and competitive, so make sure you choose the right specialisation for you. On graduation, you will be able to analyse complex data sets and construct compelling financial models.

Unsurprisingly, graduates with a postgraduate economics qualification will be in high demand, particularly in the financial sector. Many students go into banking, consulting and management, but a graduate economics program will open the door to most industries.

  • Stockbroker
