Higher education in Sweden includes traditional university studies as well as paramedical training and post-secondary studies in music, art and acting. A total of about 300,000 students are enrolled in undergraduate studies. Master's degree education continues to be an expanding sector.

At present there are around 50 institutions of higher education in Sweden. Most of them are run by the state, some by regional government, and a few are private. Central government establishes the targets and frameworks for the universities and colleges and delegates decisions concerning the content of studies to the institutions themselves.

The university colleges vary in size and educational profile. Some offer courses and programmes up to advanced level as well as certain research activities. The specialisation or profile of each has often developed out of connections with local trade and industry. The smaller university colleges are limited to fewer programmes such as teacher training, engineering and business administration.

Nine colleges of fine arts offer education and in-service training and conduct research and development in the arts field. A few colleges of health sciences specialise in education for nurses, midwives, laboratory assistants and other paramedical professions.

Tuition Fees

With rare exceptions, tuition fees in Master's degree education in Sweden are fully subsidised by the government. This applies to both foreign and Swedish students. Master's degree education is financed by the state, a system common to many European countries. Please note that scholarships are not awarded by institutions of higher education.
