Testimonials

Daniel Lucas - Canada

"Great foundation of knowledge in a variety of areas."

Daniel Lucas from Canada graduated from the Master’s programme in International Business. He is currently working for Wärtsilä in Global Logistics Services (WGLS), in the Distribution and Invoicing department with the title of Delivery Coordinator.

"In this role my daily responsibility is creating, coordinating and notifying Wärtsilä’s customers of deliveries exported to the America’s as well as the Middle East and Asia. I also coordinate deliveries with international colleagues internally as well as global customers and freight forwarders externally to ensure that our parts arrive on time wherever they are needed."

Daniel first began as a summer trainee but has since continued his work in the company. He began to work at Wärtsilä right after graduation.

"I had thoroughly researched the specific role that I was interested in before submitting my application, which was tailored to applying my newly developed International Business skills for a career in global logistics."

Daniel values the skills the programme gave him and was immediately able to apply them in his daily work.

"This derives from a greater understanding of the internal and external forces influencing the operations of a multinational corporation. Specifically regarding the international supply chain, exporting regulations, and managing international business relationships. Additionally, strong cross cultural communication skills developed through the MIB programme have greatly assisted in working in a multicultural environment."

Nayoung Choi - South Korea

"Opportunities to get wider and more valuable experiences"

Nayoung Choi from South-Korea studied in the Master's programme in International Business and graduated as a Master of Science in Economics and Business Administration.

She is currently working as a research officer at the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Finland. During her studies, Ambassadors from different countries visited University of Vaasa and she had the opportunity to meet the Korean Ambassador.  It was after the meeting when she became interested in working at the Embassy. Nayoung was just graduating when the Embassy had an opening. She began her work first as a substitute, but was later hired as a full-time employee.

Her work entails researching Finnish related issues such as welfare systems, regulations or other political, cultural and economic matters when needed. Assisting diplomats to organize cultural events and other administrative tasks are part of her daily work.

Nayoung says that though her work is not directly related to business, the study programme gave a variety of other skills as well, which were appreciated by the employer; “There are lots of opportunities to get wider and more valuable experiences, such as exchange programs, field trips or seminars”. The multicultural understanding and excellent English skills, which she gained during her studies, was an asset when applying to work at the Embassy.

She says that students should challenge themselves during the studies and seek new things to experience. The programme provided a good platform to experience things in a multicultural environment, and it encourages students for internationalization. “From new experiences, we always learn something and have more creative ideas and thinking. Those will make you become an attractive candidate when you apply for a job later!”

His last positions were Manager of Operations for three years in China, and Division IT Manager.

"Getting working experience while studying, even though it was very hard, was very rewarding. It helped to steer me in the right direction for my career development. Keeping an open mind during my studies and the willingness to learn new things has allowed me to take on many new and rewarding challenges."

"The course packages and flexibility of the university also provided the basis for my success today. I could expand my studies beyond what was needed to graduate, combine the work with my studies, and could select study packages that gave me wider knowledge of the industrial world and, therefore, I could apply myself better to these needs."
