Missouri Western State University is a four-year public university of approximately 5,400 students which offers both undergraduate and graduate degrees, certificates and associate degrees.
The Graduate School at Missouri Western offers 26 masters and graduate certificate programs with an applied learning approach to program delivery that includes unique Master of Applied Science and Master of Applied Arts degree programs.
Missouri Western is located in the Midwestern United States in St. Joseph, Missouri, which has a population of approximately 76,000 residents. The campus is located 35 minutes from the Kansas City International Airport.Kansas City, Missouri, isless than an hour from campus and is a large metropolitan area of more than 2 million people. International students love that the University is located in a good-sized city with lots of amenities and access to a large city that is only about one hour away.
Missouri Western is student centered and is known for its high-quality instruction and hands-on opportunities both within the classroom and outside of the classroom. Students can hold internships, conduct research with professors, volunteer in the community, participate in study away trips, and more. The University maintains modern laboratories and state-of-the-art equipment and technologyfor students to learn and use on a routine basis both in course work and for research because students learn on technology they will be using once they graduate and enter the workforce.
The University is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission, and many of its academic programs hold national and international program accreditations.
All students are invited and encouraged to become involved in extra-curricular activities that match their interests. Missouri Western has almost 100 student clubs and organizations, both academic- and non-academic related.
Missouri Western hosts a variety of sports teams – baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, football, men's and women's golf, women's soccer, softball, women's tennis, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field, and women's volleyball.
Along with 10 academic buildings, the more than 700-acre campus contains seven residence halls, a fitness center, a student center, a baseball and softball complex, a planetarium, and a sports complex that includes an indoor football field. The beautifully landscaped campus also offers outdoor tennis and basketball courts, an outdoor football and soccer stadium, an indoor swimming pool, hiking trails, and an outdoor biology study area.
The International Student Services Office on campus is willing to help international students with anything they need, and faculty work with students to make sure they succeed.
The office is an outstanding resource for international students. The most important job of the office is ensuring that international students maintain legal immigration status while at the University. Staff members not only help international students with their paperwork and required documents, but they help guide students through their entire education experience.
Office staff also plan a variety of events for international students to help them adjust to life in the United States and to meet both international and domestic students. Events include an international fair, a soccer tournament, a lecture series and a variety of fun events and celebrations.
Additionally, the office provides the following services:
- Orientation for new students
- Coordinating airport pick-up for new students
- Conducting cultural adjustment seminars, discussions, or workshops
- Providing opportunities for service learning, leadership development and networking opportunities
- Planning programs for students
- Helping with verification letters to apply for a Social Security card, and/or a driver's license
- Holding workshops on Optional Practical Training (OPT), and Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
The office also has an International Diplomat program, which connects new international students with student mentors in order to enhance the international student experience at Missouri Western. This helps the international students succeed both academically and socially.
The Intensive English Program at Missouri Western State University has been developed to offer international students a strong foundation in the English language.
The University’s program offers English as a Second Language courses at three levels: beginning, intermediate and advanced. Lessons in the course include listening and speaking, grammar and composition, reading, and academic writing. The Intensive English Program also plans cultural excursions to area attractions and events.
The program also offers conversation partners, which pairs international students with native speakers of English. This is extremely helpful to international students and an excellent opportunity for them to engage in conversation with English speakers.
The Intensive English Program provides a foundation that enables international students to succeed in their chosen academic fields and become more comfortable living in the community.
International students who do not take the TOEFL or IELTS exams, or who do not meet the scoring criteria for admission into Missouri Western, can receive conditional admission to the University and be enrolled in the Intensive English Program. Following completion of the Intensive English Program students can then move into regular academic programs.
