What will I study in a graduate web design and development program?
Do you want to have an influence on the websites that people log onto every day? Do you have a flare for design, enjoy creative challenge, and want to see your finished product giving value to a business, organisation or consumer? During your graduate program in web design and development you will study the processes that are required to build websites and other interactive systems on the internet.
You are likely to study HTML and Cascading Style Sheets (CSS), as well as learning about usability of the sites you are building and web standards. You will also study how to create designs for various different business purposes.
Length of program
The length of a web design and development graduate program depends on where you study. Masters programs last the following duration in each country:
- UK – One year full time/two year part time
- US – 1-2 years
- China – 2-3 years
- Canada – 1-2 years
You will need an undergraduate honours degree in a related subject in order to be successful in applying for your graduate program in web design and development. It is also likely that to be admitted to a course you will need to have a substantial amount of work experience in an IT and/or design environment.
If you are not a native of the country in which you are planning to undertake your graduate web design and development program it is likely that you will be required to take a language test in order to prove your proficiency.
There are a number of different jobs you could pursue after a graduate program in web design and development. You could write and build websites, and choose whether or not to focus on the design side of the role. You could work for multi-national organisations in building their online websites and products, or for a media company creating magazines, or any number of other roles.
If you want to work for yourself after the completion of your graduate program you could become a freelancer, undertaking work for different clients and building relationships with them in order that you always have a stream of work coming in.
Alternatively, you could decide to further your academic career with further study or with research.
