What will I study on an MBA?
Studying for an MBA will is a very popular postgraduate programme to take with around 100,000 students graduating per year from approximately 1,000 US business schools and 550 European business schools.
MBA programs can be full-time or part-time; modular or through distance learning. Distance learning is an increasingly popular route to take an MBA course.
Regardless of which type of MBA program you decide to take, the core of the course will consist of both basic business skills and electives. Core courses will cover managerial economics, financial and management accounting, marketing, quantitative methods, human resource management, operations management, information systems and business strategy.
Increasingly universities are offering specialist MBAs, but these core subjects still form the basis of the programme.
Length of program
Full-time MBA programs usually last one year, where part-time courses which offer students the chance to integrate their studies with employment experience, tend to last two of three years.
Distance learning MBA programs on average take three to five years.
Entry requirements can vary from one school to the next but a first or upper second undergraduate degree is required by most business school offering an MBA program.
Applicants are usually also required to take an entrance exam called the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). The GMAT comprises tests in numeracy, literacy, verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Non-English-speaking applicants are also required to take an English language test.
