What will I study?
Everyone wants a winning smile, and without dentists few of us would have one. To be a professional in the dental profession you will need to study on a graduate dental program.
As a highly specialist area it is impossible to become a dentist on undergraduate qualifications alone. In general it is graduates who progress into dental schools to study dental programs.
Graduate programs in dental schools cover all the practical and theoretical aspects of dentistry and comprise of both traditional lectures and seminars, and practical experience.
Length of program
The length of a graduate dentistry program depends on where you study, but following an undergraduate bachelors degree you can generally expect to spend 3 to 5 years studying at a dental school.
Dental schools have either graduate-level or postgraduate-level entry. In most cases you will be expected to have an undergraduate degree in dentistry or high-grade in a degree with a strong focus on science, especially biology or chemistry.
On research based postgraduate programs you may be required to submit a research proposal as part of your application.
If you are studying in a country where the first language is different from your own, you may be required to take a language test to prove your skills.
After completing a lengthy stint studying dentistry it is expected that graduates will work as a dentist or in some other part of the dental industry.
Being such a specialist area it is rare for people to move into any other profession after completing a graduate dental program.
Fees and funding
The cost of graduate medical programs varies widely from country to country and university to university. Remember that fees depend on whether you are a home, EU or international student. As a guide, expect to pay the following in these countries per year:
- UK - £12,000 - £20,000
- USA - $20,000 - $62,000
