Study a graduate program in bioscience
What will I study in a graduate biosciences program?
The choices for a graduate program in biosciences are wide-ranging, so what you study will depend on the area you want to specialise in. You can expect your postgraduate biosciences degree to specialise in one of the four main areas: cell theory; evolution, gene theory and homeostasis.
You will be able to choose from courses in molecular biology, biophysics, neurobiology, genetics, pharmaceuticals and microbiology to name but a few. What links all these courses is the complexity and depth of study that you will be expected to enter. Studying biological sciences requires commitment, research and a lot of complex thinking and many postgraduate biosciences students go onto careers in academia or scientific research.
Length of program
Depending on which country you study in, bioscience postgraduate courses will vary in length. Here are some examples of country and length:
- UK- 1-3 years
- US – 1-3 years
- China – 1-3 years
- Canada – 1-3 years
Many graduate programs in biosciences lead straight into PhDs, which will prolong your study by normally at least a further two years.
If you want to study a graduate program in biosciences or a related subject, you will have to have a relevant undergraduate qualification in a subject such as biology, chemistry or other related scientific subjects.
If you choose to study in a country with a different first language to your own, you may need to take a language course/test before admitted. For example, English language programs may ask you to complete a TOEFL or IELTS test.
Biological sciences postgraduates often look to go into scientific research or further specialised study such as a PhDon completing their degrees. However, the skills you gain on an undergraduate biological sciences degree will prepare you for several careers.
Typical areas of work that biosciences postgraduates go into include:
- Scientific research
- Business and economics
Fees and funding
The cost of graduate biosciences programs varies widely, depending on the country, the institution and the course. Many courses will charge international students a higher tuition fee rate than home students.
Here are some examples of countries and how much their average biosciences postgraduate course will cost you:
- UK £5,000 - £16,000 (national or international)
- USA - $13,000- $30,000
- China – RMB 17,000 - 36,000
