Due to ever-evolving technology, traditional ways of learning have had to move aside, making way for the more flexible form of education that distance learning provides.
Students around the world are choosing distance learning over traditional colleges and universities more and more for the way it caters to the busy lifestyle.
International students like yourselves are finding that distance learning opens doors for higher education, making it easier to earn a degree at an accredited institution in another country.
So what exactly is distance learning?
It is learning that occurs despite there separation by time and/or distance between the student and instructor. The Internet, satellite, CDs, interactive video conferencing and audio, and other forms of technology enable this learning to occur. Students unable to afford the steep costs of studying full-time in another country and students incapable of completing a full-time course due to work obligations can easily pursue a degree via a distance learning programme.
The types of technologies used in distance learning are divided into two groups: synchronous and asynchronous. Synchronous technologies, including telephone, video conferencing, and web conferencing, require that all participants be present at the same time. Conversely, asynchronous technologies like E-mail, CD’s and message board forums allow students to learn at their own pace. You should consider your lifestyle and goals regarding your education when choosing which type of distance learning to take part in.
Those sceptical of distance learning may argue that this form of education eliminates the social networking opportunities available by attending a college or university. However, that is not the case. Synchronous discussions provoke interaction with other students, through chat rooms or conferencing calls. Asynchronous discussions also encourage communication between students, just in a less timely fashion. And while it is important to follow the rules of the chat room or whatever forum being used (see How to Be a Successful Distance Learning Student), students can arrange a time away from the course to further discuss a topic. It is important to remember that although distance separates you, technology make social interaction easy.
In addition, communication with instructors and even tutors is easy to obtain online. Anytime you have a question, simply email your instructor or see if he or she is available for an online chat or telephone call. Often students find that the student-instructor relationship is even strong for this type of learning. Also, if you need further help with your studies, many institutions with distance learning programmes offer a tutorial service.
The process of distance learning can differ from course to course. When test time comes along, many institutions allow students to take the exam without having to travel to a traditional classroom. Often local proctors monitor the test, making to process more credible. For institutions that expect students to travel to an examination centre, there is often the option of arranging an exam especially for you at an extra cost. Carefully consider this issue before signing up for any course.
With the wide variety of distance learning courses available with a few clicks of a button, students should be cautious about which one to spend their money on. Do your research to ensure that the online college or university you choose is accredited, or you risk rejection of your degree years down the road. Talk to the school itself, and even the agency which accredited it, to get a better feel of the institution’s legitimacy.
Over 1.1 million students around the world are turning to online courses, and that doesn’t even including other forms of communication. No matter your geographical location, with a little initiative and research you can be on your way to earning a degree in any course of your choice.

The syllabus also gives the due dates for assignments, which you will send online or through the mail. Look ahead at these dates to plan appropriately.
