This Mark Twain quote could have been uttered by anyone that has had the privilege of experiencing these islands of incredible beauty. Hawaii is a unique blend of American culture and also diversity and these qualities are reflected in the Hawaiian higher education system as well as the daily lives of all lucky enough to experience Hawaii.

The Hawaiian Life

It would be hard to find anyone that has not heard of the great beauty and hospitality of the Hawaiian Islands. The largest industry in Hawaii is tourism, and thousands of people flock here every year to take advantage of the warm climate, breathtaking views, and endless outdoor activities that are available.

Hawaii is located in the North Pacific Ocean, 2,300 miles from the United States mainland. The main source of transportation outside of the island is by air, and a highway system is in use in the islands. Transport by boat is also readily available. It is the longest island chain in the world and consists of eight islands. Hawaii enjoys a tropic climate that is moderated by the ocean, and does not normally experience extreme temperatures. There is one major city, Honolulu, located on the Oahu Island. All other populations are located in incorporations.

Hawaii has a population of around 1.3 million people. It is a vastly diverse island, with 2 official languages, English and Hawaiian. It is the first state in the Union to be distinguished as a majority/minority state, with the highest population being of Asian descent. Hawaii is known for its racial, cultural, and religious tolerance and the unique way that all of its citizens live in harmony.

Geographically, Hawaii is nearly unrivaled for beauty in the United States. Made up of lush rainforests, volcanoes, rolling plains, and ocean views, Hawaii has something to offer any visitor. Water activities such as water skiing, surfing, diving, and boating are popular, as well as hiking and sightseeing throughout the islands.

Hawaii divides its educational system into a public and a private system. The public system consists of the University of Hawaii System. This college consists of 10 campuses on 6 islands. Public education in Hawaii is considered to be a great money-value option. The public colleges offer outstanding education with a student body that is the highest for diversity in the United States. Students are able to live in an area of unmatched beauty and temperate climates while also studying in a competitive system that will prepare them for the world after graduation.

International Graduate Students

As an international student, you would be hard-pressed to find a state that offers a more diverse education than Hawaii. Hawaiian graduate schools are ranked number one in the country for enrolled international students and faculty. International students make up 22% of graduate students in the higher education system. Hawaii is a center for mixing of people of all races and backgrounds, and various festivals and concerts throughout the year celebrate the culture of all nationalities represented.
