Postgraduate Opportunities in Cardiovascular Rehabilitation at the University of Chester
The Master's programme in cardiovascular rehabilitation was launched in September 2003 and aims to provide postgraduate education and training opportunities for health professionals. It was also designed to for those aspiring to work in this high profile field. The cardiovascular rehabilitation programme is characterised by its multidisciplinary approach stressing the importance of evidence-based practice in ensuring high standards of cardiovascular rehabilitation. It is taught by internationally recognise clinicians and researchers in the area. The postgraduate course in cardiovascular rehabilitation is supported by the British Association for Cardiovascular Rehabilitation. It is taught in our Centre for Exercise and Nutrition Science.
The graduate course is proving to be very popular. Cardiovascular rehabilitation at the University of Chester attracts a wide range of students from the UK, mainland Europe and worldwide: doctors, cardiologists, physiotherapists, nurse practitioners, occupational therapists, health psychologists, pharmacists, pharmacologists, radiologists, exercise specialists, dietitians, nutritionists, health promotion specialists, public health managers, teachers and lecturers. Applicants must hold a first degree in a related area, or have equivalent professional qualifications and background work experience.
The postgraduate cardiovascular rehabilitation programme consists of a series of Taught Modules - each being delivered as a short, intensive course over 3 days, followed by 12 weeks of home-based learning and the submission of a 5,000-word assignment. Each module is accredited with CPD points from the Royal College of Physicians, London.
Students are able to select from the following taught modules:
- Cardiovascular Anatomy and Exercise Physiology (compulsory)
- Cardiovascular Risk Factors (compulsory)
- Cardiovascular Diseases, Investigation & Treatments (compulsory)
- Clinical Exercise Testing and Prescription
- Exercise Assessment & Leadership
- Nutrition and Cardiovascular Health
- Cardiovascular Psychology
- Public Health Policy, Programme Planning & Management
- Research Methods & Data Analysis
Study patterns are highly flexible and the taught modules may be studied as single, stand-alone accredited 3-day courses, or as part of a postgraduate qualification:
- Postgraduate Certificate: 3 Taught Modules
- Postgraduate Diploma: 6 Taught Modules
- Master of Science: 6 Taught Modules + Masters Thesis
The graduate course in cardiovascular rehabilitation commences annually in September and its high level of flexibility means that the Master's degree may be completed in 1-year of full-time study or up to 6 years of part-time study, at a pace to suit personal needs and work situations. The timetable is published well in advance to enable students to plan their study leave time and make appropriate travel/accommodation arrangements.
The Centre for Exercise and Nutrition Science is an international postgraduate centre for specialist teaching and research in exercise and nutrition science, cardiovascular rebabilitation and weight management, and is located in the Faculty of Applied & Health Sciences.
