In undertaking a taught Masters, students build upon the knowledge acquired during their first degrees and obtain a new set of skills.  The Masters environment teaches effective researching, analysis, and problem solving.  The small to medium classroom size of most programmes facilitate an interactive setting whereby students actively participate in discussions and workshops.  Furthermore, these programmes encourage independent learning through classroom activities, seminars, and various forms of assessments.  The degree reinforces communication skills by teaching students essay writing and presentation preparation and delivery.  The skill set gained from a taught Masters prepares the student for the work environment and increases their marketability to potential employers.

In 2009 the global pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and life sciences industries generated revenues of $1,071.7 billion and this is forecasted to rise to $1,402.4 billion by 2014 (Datamonitor, 2010).  This industry group encompasses multiple business sectors involved in drug discovery, food processing, agriculture, fuels and energy, bioremediation, and mining, to name a few.  Technological innovation and ideas are driving productivity within these industries.  In order for businesses to maintain their position and success, effective management, investment, and application of new technologies is essential.  Thus, the biotechnology industry is in demand of individuals possessing an understanding of science and technology with the business insight to commercialize and realize these ideas and inventions.

A Masters in biotechnology and business provides the graduate with valuable training directed at this sector.  These courses are designed to go beyond fundamental concepts related to science and management and discuss their application in an industrial setting.  Students work in small groups to prepare written reports and presentations.  This exercise teaches leadership and team working and is a reflection of common practice in a business setting.  In addition, the project dissertation prepared as part of the degree requires the student to apply the tools gained throughout the course.
