Research universities (Wetenschappelijk Onderwijs (WO)), have a focus on research-oriented work in an academic setting. universities of applied sciences (Hoger Beroepsonderwijs (HBO)) prepare students directly for specific careers and are therefore more practically oriented. Another, smaller type of higher education are the Institutes of International Education offer programmes generally conducted in English, designed to meet the needs of foreign students.

University level first stage: Bachelor

Research university bachelor’s programmes typically last three years. A bachelor’s programme at a research university results in the degree of Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Bachelor of Arts (BA). A bachelor’s programme at a university of applied sciences generally requires four years of study. After completing a bachelor’s programme at a university of applied sciences, one receives the degree of Bachelor (B) with an explanation of the discipline (e.g. Bachelor of Physical Therapy).

University level second stage: Master

After obtaining a bachelor’s degree at a research university, one can continue studying for a master’s degree (MSc or MA). After completing a master’s programme at a university of applied sciences, one receives a masters degree (M) with an explanation of the discipline (e.g. Master of Education). Depending on the discipline, a master’s programme takes between one to two years. For most programmes, a thesis is a major component of the programme.

University level third stage: PhD

The PhD (Doctoraat) is generally offered at research universities. It is a research degree and the highest university degree available in Holland. After a master’s, it can be obtained by serving as an assistant researcher or by researching and writing a doctoral dissertation under the supervision of a full professor. Researching and writing the dissertation for a PhD programme requires about four years in Holland.
