The School of Chemistry at Nottingham is one of the leading Chemistry Schools in the UK and is recognised internationally for its world leading research portfolio, excellence in teaching and extensive engagement with Industry. It is currently second in the national rankings (between Cambridge and Oxford) for the quality of its research (RAE 2008) and was rated “Excellent” in the latest assessment of teaching quality. Through its unique Business Partnership Unit, the School has established research and commercial partnerships with a wide range of chemistry using companies ranging from major multi-nationals to local small and medium enterprises. The school has also generated and retains close links with four spin-out companies.

Research in the School of Chemistry

The School of Chemistry has a thriving research environment with 160 postgraduate students and 60 post-doctoral fellows from all regions of the world. These co-workers support the research activity of 38 academic staff which is underpinned by 60 professional, managerial and technical staff. The school has access an extensive range of specialist facilities and analytical equipment.

The School’s research interests range from fundamental studies in organic, biological, inorganic, materials, physical and computational chemistry to applied research at the interfaces with other disciplines such as biological sciences, medicine and engineering.  Particular strengths lie in synthetic and medicinal chemistry, green chemistry and sustainable chemical processing.

Teaching in the School of Chemistry

The School’s offers a wide range of teaching programmes that provide a first class up-to-date training in chemistry and prepare students for a variety of future careers. Many of our programmes offer opportunities to study overseas or to gain work experience within industry.

The School’s purpose built teaching laboratories are fully equipped to teach modern practical chemistry skills. We have recently opened a new Student Support Centre and have upgraded our two main lecture theatres to include state-of-the-art audio and visual facilities for teaching professional development activities and conferences.

Admissions Criteria

Applicants should hold at least an Upper Second Class Honours Bachelor's degree, or equivalent, in Chemistry from an approved University and must provide:

  • Two satisfactory academic references within last 2 years.
  • Original Transcript of Marks and Higher Education Certificates e.g. BSc/MSc.

Applicants whose first language is not English, and who do not have a degree from a UK institution, will be required to produce evidence of their competence in English.  One of the following would normally be required:

  • A British Council IELTS average final score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in any one element, achieved no more than 2 years prior to admission.
  • A TOEFL paper-based test score of 573, including a minimum score of 4.5 in the Test of Written English, Internet Based Test (iBT) minimum 88 with a minimum score of 19 in any element, achieved no more than 2 years prior to admission.
