Student Testimonials
University of Newcastle Australia
Conor Doyle, Ireland
(B. of Engineering)

"I liked the idea of studying overseas and Newcastle has a great program, great beaches and being close to Sydney is great too. The best thing about the University has to be its campus. Everywhere is really green and there is so much wildlife!

My advice is find out about Newcastle, make a decision and apply. It is such a great opportunity and you will have an unforgettable time.”

Caroline Lovegrove, United Kingdom
Age: 19

Chose Newcastle

I came to study at Newcastle because it is close to Sydney, but also far enough away. The University campus, being in a bushland setting, is a refreshing change from the pace of the city campus of Manchester. I also want to mix my studies with travelling, and the geographical location of Newcastle made it an ideal focal point for any adventures that I plan to pursue.

The Best Things

Academically, the lecturers here are very helpful and the courses have a greater variety of learning modes, with more tutorials, laboratories and field trips than I am used to at home. The staff are also great! I had a few problems with my selection of classes for credit at home, and they were very accommodating and helpful with making the changes. The course here is very similar to the one that I am undertaking in Manchester and as such the credit transfer works very well for me. The difference is that we are studying local and Sydney based case studies which will give me an edge over my peers when I return home for my 3rd year.

Newcastle Life

I love the beaches in Newcastle, we have none back home and Newcastle city alone has more than 5! The friendliness of the people here has really taken me aback and when I go out there is a great variety of places to go and it’s cheaper. I found it very easy to settle in here as I attended all of the orientation week activities that the University provided and in doing so I have made friends with people from all over the world - literally!

My Advice

My recommendations to future students would be to take the opportunity to live on campus if you can - it gives you an immediate support system. I would also recommend you bring more warm clothes than you think you need. Winter can also be pretty cold, although some days have been warmer than a summer day in the UK. If you are planning to study at Newcastle, stay as long as you can so you can fit in travel and really experience life here… oh and by the way, buy a one-way ticket!
