A private law school with an international perspective
Hamline University School of Law offers a graduate program leading to a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree for lawyers holding an LL.B. or equivalent degree from outside the United States. Hamline’s Alternative Dispute Resolution Center is ranked fifth in the United States by U.S. News & World Report. Hamline Law School also offer ABA-approved international study programs in Norway, Israel, Italy, England, and France/Hungary.
The LL.M. for International Lawyers course of study builds on the Hamline law school’s international studies program. Our faculty are experts in intellectual property, alternative dispute resolution, business regulation, jurisprudence, and trial practice; and commercial, business, labor, constitutional, public, criminal and international law.
LL.M. candidates work with an advisor to design a program of study for the year. Each program provides a select group of qualified individuals the opportunity to pursue a general course of comparative study or to focus on special areas such as Business Law, Public Law, Human Rights, International or Comparative Law, Intellectual Property Law, or Alternative Dispute Resolution. Master of Laws candidates also may pursue joint degree opportunities with Hamline’s Graduate School of Management, as well as a diploma in Intellectual Property and a Certificate in Dispute Resolution.
- Joint degree opportunities with Hamline’s Graduate School of Management provide individuals with legal and managerial skills to serve in private law firms, government, nonprofit agencies, or in consulting firms whose clients interact heavily with the public and private sectors. These joint degrees can be earned by exchanging some LL.M. credits with credits from the Graduate School of Management. Joint degrees available are: LL.M/M.A.P.A., LL.M./M.A.M., LL.M./M.A.N.M. Details for the joint degrees can be found at www.hamline.edu/law/llm
- Diploma in Intellectual Property provides an opportunity for Hamline LL.M. students to develop an original work of individual research in intellectual property law or related fields, including topics of patient, trademark and copyright law, international treaties administered by WIPO or entered into pursuant to the TRIPS accord, as well as topical issues on piracy, e-commerce, media, arts, or indigenous knowledge and folklore. Course offerings and descriptions can be found at www.hamline.edu/law/llm
- Certificate in Dispute Resolution is a comprehensive 14-credit course of instruction in conflict theory and dispute resolution processes. Established in 1996, the program offers students the opportunity to develop their ADR knowledge and skills in an organized, thoughtful and scholarly way. This certificate can be completed within the LL.M. curriculum. It may, however, require completing several ADR courses during the J-Term or summer session. More details can be found at www.hamline.edu/law/llm
In addition to a rich full-time program, we offer international and part-time weekend opportunities.
