California’s First Law School
LL.M. in U.S. Legal Studies
Hastings College of the Law, established in 1878, is the first law faculty of the University of California and is the third largest public law school in the United States. Hastings, situated in downtown San Francisco just steps away from the federal and state courts, has been at the center of the legal community in the West. In addition to legal practice that covers the entire spectrum of law, Hastings graduates sit as judges on the California bench by a 3-to-1 margin over any other law school.
Hastings offers a one-year LL.M. degree in United States Legal Studies for 20 students holding a law degree from a foreign law faculty. The small size of the program offers individual attention to LL.M. students, while the large size of the law school offers a wide diversity of courses so students can tailor their LL.M. studies to fit their interests. LL.M. students may also participate in the legal clinics, law journals, and research centers at Hastings to enhance their academic experience. Our research centers include Gender & Refugee Studies, Negotiation & Dispute Resolution, Public Law, State & Local Government Law, and Work Life Law. Hastings has five areas of study concentrations, which reflect the strength of faculty resources and expertise. These include international law, taxation, public interest law, civil litigation, and family law.
Hastings is located in the heart of San Francisco, one of the most beautiful cities in the United States where the climate is always mild and ocean, parks and mountains abound. San Francisco is a culturally rich and diverse city with international cuisine, art and music to enjoy.
