Introduction
The Physics department at Bristol has a long history of discovery and the understanding of physical phenomena and continues to offers an outstanding intellectual environment for both its staff and its undergraduate and postgraduate students. Researchers within the Department explore physics at all length scales from the cosmological to the sub-nuclear, including strong activities in nanoscience and condensed matter physics. The department forms an integral part of the Faculty of Science, widely recognised as one of the UK’s leading centres of research excellence and ranked 3rd behind Cambridge and Oxford in the 2008 UK Research Assessment Exercise.
Research Groups
The Department has around 90 teaching and research staff and enjoys a strong international reputation in a wide range of research areas, including
- Astrophysics and cosmology
- Correlated electron systems
- Micro- and nanostructural materials
- Nanophysics and soft matter
- Particle physics
- Quantum photonics
- Theoretical physics
The Department is housed within the H. H. Wills Physics Laboratory that is currently undergoing a major investment programme designed to create a new state-of-the-art research environment for both students and staff alike. The refurbishment will include an upgrade of all existing infrastructure as well as the construction of new facilities. These exciting developments are in addition to several other major projects recently completed within the Department, such as the new high performance computing centre, an e-Science access grid and a new centre for Nanoscience and Quantum Information that also plays host to a new doctoral training centre in functional nanomaterials. In brief, the Department has a bright future, a clear vision and a strong desire to carry out cutting-edge science across all major fields of Physics.
We are seeking applications from talented and highly motivated students across all activities. Enquiries should be addressed in the first instance to the postgraduate administrator, Mrs Tracie Anderson, tracie.anderson@bristol.ac.uk
