The Department of Computer Science at the University of Bath has the highest quality staff and students engaged in leading edge research, teaching and learning.
Why study Computer Science at Bath?
The University of Bath is fortunate to be based in a city of beauty and culture and yet be a neighbour of leading communications and computing industries which are making major contributions to the future of computing, through both theoretical and practical discoveries. The University has recently been ranked 10th in the Sunday Times University Guide and "is renowned for its science and engineering degrees". "Entrants are high achievers" and "Bath offers high quality teaching underpinned by an outstanding research pedigree".
Computer Science is a multi-disciplined subject that has advanced with extraordinary speed over the past few years. The Department of Computer Science has a strong commitment to participate in these advances in computing by forming partnerships with industry and other universities.
Living and studying at Bath, you will become part of a relatively small, academically select community, in a safe and friendly city. Its size compared with many other British institutions allows Bath to deliver the highest standards of postgraduate education in a stimulating but calm environment. There is an international airport at Bristol and London is less than an hour and a half by train.

We are offering an exciting new master’s portfolio in Advanced Computer Systems, consisting of interrelated master’s degree programmes that focus on critical analysis and design specification for innovative and usable systems. The programmes focus on fast moving sectors of computing technology; taught by recognised experts in each field. They offer candidates a cutting-edge experience and a qualification which is both academic and industrially relevant.
Students can apply for the following themes:
MSc Advanced Computer Systems: Agent Technology
MSc Advanced Computer Systems: Creativity and Collaborative Systems
MSc Advanced Computer Systems: Global Computing and Media Technology
MSc Advanced Computer Systems: Human Computer Interaction
MSc Advanced Computer Systems: Internet Systems
MSc Advanced Computer Systems: Mobile and Pervasive Computing
MSc Advanced Computer Systems: Security
MSc Advanced Computer Systems: Software Systems
- Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
A PhD degree is usually taken over a period of 3 years (full-time) or 6 years (part-time). The degree is awarded following the successful completion of a period of research which leads to the submission of a thesis and a viva voce. The thesis is expected to contain original research of publishable quality.
- Engineering Doctorate (EngD)
The EngD is a four-year postgraduate award intended for the UK's leading research engineers who want a high-flying career in industry. It is a radical alternative to the traditional PhD, being better suited to the needs of industry, and providing a more vocationally oriented doctorate in engineering. We currently offer EngD programmes in Systems Engineering and Digital Entertainment.
